Steal her Look: Nicole Richie
2009: All About Pants
Recently designers decided it would be better if our lower halves were shocking and hideous as opposed to boring. And, at first, I was thrilled at the new ideas. But I really thing things have gone too far and we as women need to step up and say, “No More!” Sure boot cut may be uninspired, but at least it’s universally flattering! But I get ahead of myself, let’s first take a look back at the crazy evolution of pants.
Honestly, it started back in 2007 when jodhpurs made an appearance on the runways, particularly the Balenciaga show. Women got all excited over this new, completely different silhouette and so more and more designers copied this look. It was heralded as “comfortable” and “great for real women who have hips.” I don’t know about you guys, but when an article of clothing bags out in an area, it tends to make said area look bigger on me
As we entered 2008, the new focus on pants continued, particularly with the oversized boyfriend jeans made popular by Katie Holmes. Again, I don’t know about you but that look also tended to make me look heavier than I really was!
Jumpsuits and rompers also became popular in ’08, a look that pretty much directs all attention right to your lower tummy. Was this all an ingenious plot by Spanx??
Then 2009 hit and pants fever hit an all-time high. Suddenly the new look was billowing harem pants, drop crotches… yet another unflattering shape made popular by who knows! I admit, I talked about them just like everyone else, but in my defense I mostly said how hard the look was to pull off!
I think maybe some people did subconsciously revolt in 2009, how else can you explain the popularity of Lady Gaga’s “no pants” look? Again, the focus was on our lower halves, an obsession with pants (or a lack of).
And then there were jean leggings. I am neither pro- nor anti-leggings, but this was just a hideous development. To be clear, I consider jeans that are super stretchy denim with a fly, pockets and belt loops to be skinny, stretchy jeans. “Jeggings” are simply pull on pants made of denim… and an abomination of nature!
Now that it’s 2010, I resolve to not wear hideous pants. Sure, they may try to push pleated, printed pants on me this spring, but I will just say no! I know what looks best on me and I’m sticking to it… unless they bring gaucho pants back, I would totally rock that :O
